2. 컴퓨터 관련 용어
어떤 명령어를 처리하는데 소비되는 간접적, 추가적인 컴퓨터 자원을 의미한다.
예를 들면 에러 코렉션 코드(ECC)나 체크섬(CRC: cycle redundancy check)등등. 채널의 노이즈가 심하거나 고속/저전력 데이터 통신의 경우 데이터가 잘못 전송되는 일이 흔하기 때문에 거의 반드시 들어간다.
참고로 이런 저런 방법으로 오버헤드를 줄일 순 있지만 없애는 것은 불가능하다.
Overhead라는 단어 자체는 원래 부대비용 또는 운영비용이라는 뜻이지만, 한국어에서 '오버헤드'하면 컴퓨터 관련 용어를 떠올린다.
