뒤랑달

1. 개요
롤랑의 노래와 광란의 오를란도에 등장하는 명검으로 12기사 중 그 수장이었던 롤랑의 검이다.
영어명인 듀랜달(Durendal)이 유명하다. 이탈리아어로는 두를린다나(Durlindana).
뒤랑달이라는 이름에 대해서는 어원학적으로 제설이 있으며, 일반적으로는 프랑스어로 견디다, 지속하다를 뜻하는 durer에서 유래한 것으로 알려져 있다.
2. 설명
롤랑의 노래에 따르면 뒤랑달은 천사가 사를마뉴에게 내려준 검으로 그가 롤랑의 공적을 치하하며 하사했고 한다. 광란의 오를란도에서는 위대한 기사 헥터가 지녔었던 검으로 모그리가 건내줬다고 한다. 다른 민담으로는 유트문더스(Jutmundus)라는 거인을 죽이고 그가 가지고 있던 뒤랑달을 바쳤으나 역시 샤를마뉴가 그의 공적을 칭송하며 선물로 하사했다는 말도 있다. 톨레도에 있는 계곡에 숨겨져 있던 명검이란 말도 있듯 뒤랑달의 행적에 관해선 다른 많은 이야기가 있다....Malakin son of Ivin came to Karl's castle and asked if King Karlamagnus would release Abraham, his brother, who had been in prison for more than fourteen years: "and '''I have three swords which are the best possible. Galant the smith, of England, made them, and he heated them in the forge for seven years'''; King Faber gave them to me as a surety for seven hundred gold coins. As soon as King Karlamagnus came home, he called Namlun to him and told him to bring the swords which Malakin of Ivin had given him. He drew the swords from their scabbards and looked at them, and they seemed to be good. After that he went to the steel mound before his hall, and struck the first of the swords into it a hand's breadth, so that there was a little notch in it. "Certainly that is a good sword," says the king, "and I shall call it '''Kurt'''."
Then he struck in the second a hand's breadth or more, and called that '''Almacia''', and said it was good to strike heathens with. He then struck with the third, and rent more than half the length of a man's foot; he said, "That sword shall be named '''Dyrumdali'''," and he kept that with him, for he loved it dearly.

Now that King Karlamagnus was home, a letter came to him from the pope, saying that a great war had broken out between the Lombards and the men of Bretland, and it was doing much harm to the Romans. The king was most unhappy about that; he wrote a letter asking all those who were at war to come to him in Montardal and he swore by his beard that whoever would not come to a settlement would be hanged.
He went off, with his trumpets blowing. And when he arrived in Moniardal, all of those to whom he had sent word had come there. He ordered them all to reach a settlement if they wished to keep their lives, and asked the pope to act as judge between them in their differences.

Karlamagnus did as the angel told him. He gave Rollant the sword and girded him with it, and tapped him on the neck, saying, "Good nephew, '''take Dyrumdali now, and use it''', best of men, in the memory that God gave his apostles a dwelling in Paradise."

금으로 된 뒤랑달의 칼자루에는 성 베드로의 치아, 성 대 바실리오의 피, 성 디오니시오의 머리카락, 성모 마리아의 옷 조각이 들어 있으며,[1] 한 번 베면 투구와 두개골을 베고 적의 몸을 두동강내어, 적이 탄 말의 안장과 척추까지 절단해버리는 파괴적인 위력을 자랑했다. 그런데다가 칼날이 어떠한 상황에서라도 무뎌지지 않고 이가 빠지지 않는 권능을 보였다고 하는데, 롤랑이 다 죽어가면서 이 검을 적에게 넘기지 않으려고 바위에 내리쳐서 부러트리려 했는데 도리어 바위가 두 조각으로 쪼개졌다고 한다.
778년 8월 15일, 샤를마뉴가 이베리아 반도 원정에서 돌아오던 중 피레네 산맥의 롱스포 협곡에서 기습을 받았을 때, 본대의 퇴각을 위해 후미를 맡은 롤랑이 전사하면서 그와 함께 최후를 맞았다. 이에 대해서는 실제 역사와 롤랑의 일생을 다룬 서사시 롤랑의 노래의 내용이 다른데, 실제 역사에서는 바스크인의 배신으로 인해 죽게 되나, 롤랑의 노래에서는 이교도의 습격을 받아 장렬하게 전사한다. 전승에 따라선 그 뒤랑달은 부서졌고, 그 일부가 남은 것이 커타나라는 전승도 있다.
3. 절벽에 박힌 뒤랑달

프랑스 미디피레네 주 로트 현 로카마두르(Rocamadour)의 절벽에는 뒤랑달이라 불리는 낡은 검이 박혀 있다. 12세기 로카마두르의 한 성직자는 이 검이 뒤랑달의 진품이며, 롤랑이 검을 숨기는 대신 검을 던져 이 절벽에 꽂혔다고 주장했지만, 현지 여행사들은 이 검이 실제 뒤랑달의 레플리카라고 설명하는 모양.[2]
