Greensleeves
1. 개요
16세기 경에 작곡된 영국의 전통 민요. "푸른 옷소매"라고 번역하기도 하지만 여기서의 Greensleeves는 가사에 나오는 여자 이름으로 고유명사이니 한국에서도 그린슬리브즈로 부르는 게 옳다.[1] 헨리 8세가 애인인 앤 불린을 위해 만들었다는 전설이 있지만 그 시대 후인 엘리자베스 1세 시대 곡이니 시기가 맞지 않다. “저 아기 잠이 들었네” 또는 “이 아기 누구일까”(What Child Is This?) 라는 크리스마스 캐럴로도 불린다.
윌리엄 셰익스피어의 '윈저의 즐거운 아낙네들'(The Merry Wives of Windsor)(1597경)에도 이 곡이 언급되어 있는 것으로 보아, 그 전부터 구전되어 오던 곡임에 틀림없다고 한다. 악보로 채록된 것으로 가장 오래된 것은 William Ballet's lute book(1580경)이라고.[2]
워낙 오래되고 애잔한 곡조가 마음을 울리는 유명한 곡조라 여러 가수들이나 여러 악기로나 또 여러 변주곡이 많다. 드라마나 각종 배경음악으로 많이 쓰인다. 그래서 '그린슬리브즈' 라면 몰라도 곡을 들려주면 아, 이거! 하는 사람이 많다. 한국에는 60년대 Kings Singers라는 아카펠라 그룹이 부른게 유명하다. 학교 종소리로도 쓰이는 경우가 있는데, 학교 종소리치고는 왠지 구슬픈 멜로디 때문에 인상깊게 기억해서 찾아보다가 이 곡을 알게 되는 경우도 많다.
제목이 비슷한 "Green Leaves of Summer" 라는 곡과 혼동하지 말 것. 이건 Brothers Four 라는 미국 50-60년대 4인조 남성그룹의 곡이다. 분위기도 약간 비슷하기도 하고 Brothers Four 도 Greensleeves 와 What Child Is This 곡을 부르기도 했다.

클레멘트 로빈슨(Clement Robinson)이 1584년(!) 편집한[3] 『A Handful of Pleasant Delights』에 수록된 가사다. 근대 영어(Early Modern English)로 쓰였다.

- 일본어 버전
- 일본 애니메이션 영화 마음이 외치고 싶어해의 OST로 私の 声(나의 목소리)라는 곡으로 불려졌다. 부른 인물은 나루세 준(CV: 미나세 이노리).
- 일본 각지의 방재무선 차임음으로 사용되고 있다. 이바라키현 토카이무라의 방재무선 차임음
- 카지우라 유키가 이 곡을 편곡한 《Decretum》(판결)은 마법소녀 마도카☆마기카에서 미키 사야카의 테마로 사용되기도 했다.
- 2018년 한국 드라마 미스터 션샤인에서는 유진 초이의 오르골로 나왔다. 그리고 드라마 OST 중 하나인 사비나앤드론즈의 My Home이 이 곡을 편곡하고 가사를 붙여 만든 노래이기도 하다.
- 페루초 부소니의 비가(엘레지) 4번, 투란도트에서도 이 곡조가 사용되었다. 하지만 클래식 작품에서 이 노래의 선율을 사용한 가장 유명한 예는 뭐니뭐니해도 레이프 본 윌리엄스의 '그린슬리브즈' 주제에 의한 환상곡. 본 윌리엄스는 곡의 앞뒤 단락을 '그린슬리브즈' 곡조로만 채우고 가운데 단락에서 새로운 선율을 써 넣었는데 연결이 아주 매끄럽다.
- 일부 학교에서는 종소리로도 쓰인다.
- GTA 4의 차량 중 하나인 아이스크림 트럭의 벨소리 중 하나이다.
